What are PM 2.5 Filters?

PM 2.5 filters are a special type of high-purity polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane filter designed to capture micro-particulates which are present in the air. They are similar in grade to an FFP1 mask which can help users protect themselves from airborne irritants and microbial matter.

PM 2.5 filters protect against:

  • Industrial pollution
  • Bacteria
  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Vehicle emissions

A cross section of a PM2.5 filter can be seen below.

How often should I replace my face masks filter?

The effective working life of our filters depends on a number of factors, such as; the breathing rate of the user; ambient levels of pollution; the length of time the filter is actively working; hygiene levels and the environment where the mask is used.

Taking these factors into account, we recommend that the filter should be replaced at least once every month or after 69 hours of use, whichever is sooner.

If the face mask comes into contact with a polluting substance directly, we would advise that the wearer take the precautious route and swap the filter after cleaning/washing the mask.

Will a face mask with a PM2.5 filter protect against COVID-19?

There is a lot of ongoing study in this area at present and the worlds authorities do not have a definite answer at present. Being a socially responsible corporation, we do not think it is fair to sell our face masks off the back of fear from this coronavirus.

However, there is a considerable body of research that suggests wearing a mask with a micro-filter in confined public settings (gym, shopping, public transport etc.) greatly reduces the risks of inhaling bacteria.

Worldwide, many senior health officials from countries like China, Italy and the USA agree and have begun advising all citizens to wear a face mask when in public settings during the outbreak of COVID-19.

How to change the face mask filter:

  1. Wash hands thoroughly before handling your face mask/filters. Feel free to wear protective gloves if the situation requires.
  2. Ensure the inside face of the mask is facing up so that the inner pocket can be accessed.
  3. Pull out the filter and dispose of this safely. We recommend disposing of this immediately.
  4. Wash hands again after disposal of used filter.
  5. Wash and dry face mask.
  6. Take your new unused PM2.5 filter and insert into clean face mask with ‘PM2.5’ label facing upwards – towards the inner side of the face mask.
