Original Beans

Sourcing the world’s rarest cacao beans for premium chocolates and regenerating the rainforests where they’re grown.

Every bar of Original Beans chocolate has a story to tell. These premium chocolate makers go to great lengths to source cacao beans of the rarest and finest quality.

Their “Bean Team”, based around the world, personally go in search of these undiscovered and forgotten beans, often meeting indigenous tribes and spending weeks away from the outside world. The result is one of the world’s rarest cacao collections, which their chefs whip into delicious and unique chocolates.

As well as supporting growers and their families through direct trade and paying well above the Fairtrade standard, Original Beans is fiercely dedicated to being a regenerative business.

This passion for regenerating what’s consumed is why the One Bar: One Tree Programme is an essential part of the Original Beans biz. They pay farmers additional money to plant trees, both cacao and neighbouring shade trees.

The programme is laying down positive roots in all kinds of ways: farmers get paid more, rare varieties of cacao are preserved, carbon emissions are offset and the habitat is protected for other plants and wildlife.

On all Original Beans packaging you’ll find a tracking code, referring to a batch of seedlings. Enter this on their website and you can see which nursery the seedlings have been planted in – or where your exact bar is making an impact.

Thanks to their regenerative approach and planet-friendly production methods, Original Beans has become the first and only climate-positive chocolate. Fans of their bars have helped plant more than two million trees so far, just by savouring their bars. We’re sure you’ll agree, it’s one of the best-tasting ways to live greener.

Meet The Founder

Phillipp Kauffmann comes from a long line of conservationists. One of his ancestors even helped coin the term “sustainability” way back in the eighteenth century.

It’s no surprise then that his career path eventually led him to work connected to protecting nature, from jobs with the WWF and the UN to launching Original Beans in 2008.

Phillipp’s ecology knowledge meant he approached the world of craft chocolate with his conservation hat firmly on. He’s ensured Original Beans are pioneers of sustainable farming and rainforest conservation in the industry, respected for their original approach and original flavours alike.
