Maeterna blends ethically sourced botanical oils to create their all-natural recipe. Allow it to help nourish, moisturise and calm your skin, balance oil production and improve tone and texture. All without harsh chemical ingredients that can cause breakouts and inflammation.
It’s not just what’s inside the bottle that makes Maeterna special. Their oil arrives in plantable packaging – boxes made from recycled materials, which have wildflower seeds pressed into the paper. Plant the box into soil and watch flowers spring to life over time. How cool is that?
As well as their green and natural approach, there’s another layer of social impact in Maeterna’s mission. They provide work opportunities to London’s immigrant mothers – an underserved and underprivileged community.
Whenever possible, they hire womxn and womxn of colour to help with the brand as well as donating to Women for Refugee Women. This charity supports women seeking asylum in the UK and challenges the injustices they experience.
Like so many people, siblings Almira and Mahmood Lardizabal Hussain had battled with different skincare problems over the years. After getting through more than their fair share of creams and treatments – the kind with unrecognisable ingredients lists – they turned to friends and family for plant remedy suggestions.
This is how they discovered a collection of botanical oils that moisturised and balanced skin, leaving it healthy and free from inflammation. The downside was these were tricky to source as a consumer, and expensive too.
Almira and Mahmood wanted to make it easy for both themselves and others to enjoy the benefits of these natural oils. Because good, natural skincare should be accessible.
So, they connected with organic growers and suppliers and began experimenting with small batches of what would become Maeterna’s signature facial oil. After much refining and testing, the duo had a product they were happy to share with the wider world.
